Quilt Preparation
Top:
We will be loading your top, batting and backing independently of one
another onto the machine. Therefore, please do not pin or baste
them together.
Please identify the top of your quilt with a piece of paper pinned
securely to the fabric.
If possible, trim all loose threads from the back of the quilt top.
Threads can show through on lighter fabrics, and can snag causing
uneven stitches in the quilting process.
Square your quilt top. Borders that do not lay flat may not be taken up
by the quilting. Press your seams to the best of your ability.
Stay stitch 1/4" around your quilt, especially if your borders are pieced
with bias edges. This will prevent stretching from simply handling the
quilt. The quilt will be handled as it is measured several times to
ensure it is square and it must be pinned onto the machine.
At this point the quilt should be free of embellishments. Buttons,
charms, pins and other adornments should be added after the
quilting is completed.
Batting:
We do have batting in stock, however if you wish to provide your own
please consider the following information:
Not all batting is appropriate for longarm quilting. The preferred
content is 80% cotton 20% polyester. This will also provide you with a
long lasting, durable product that will not beard through the quilt. If
you have black, or mostly very dark fabrics, you may want to consider
using a black batting. Paying attention to these small details can
make a big difference in the end.
Please make sure the batting is 8" longer and wider than your quilt
top, or 4" beyond all sides of the top. For more information on batting
choices click here.
Backing:
Please trim off the selvage edges before measuring and sewing your
backing. 100% cotton is highly recommended. (Flannel, Minkee, and
Velour are all good alternative choices) Bed sheets are not suitable
for backings as they are densely woven and prevent needle
penetration causing skipped stitches. It is very important that you
square your backing. Please make sure that the backing is exactly 8"
longer and wider than your quilt top, or exactly 4" beyond all sides of
the top.
